Established in 2024, the Lighthouse Beacon Foundation Endowment supports faculty, research, graduate students, facilities and research infrastructure in the Pigman College of Engineering. In its inaugural year, the endowment has made $160,000 in funds available for distribution, with a priority on faculty and research scholar support.

A UKSRC team of researchers led by Dr. Yekaterina Zaytseva is studying perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) exposure on gastrointestinal (GI) pathology. The GI tract is directly exposed to environmental pollutants via contaminated drinking water, food and other sources. PFOS is one of the most detected per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), commonly referred to as ‘forever chemicals’, in both surface water and groundwater in Kentucky. UKSRC Director Dr.

Dr. Rollie G. Mills, co-founder of Funky Rooster Coffee, gave a seminar taking audience members beyond the basics of coffee roasting and brewing. Dr. Mills, an expert in water filtration and avid coffee enthusiast, explored how scientific and engineering principles are key to making the perfect cup. From understanding the impact of ion concentration in water to highlighting innovative scientific projects in the coffee industry, this session deepened appreciation for the science behind every sip.
David Lu, completed his summer internship at the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Environmental Management (EM) headquarters in Washington, D.C. in August. Lu was able to arrange a tour of a cleanup site near his hometown in Western Kentucky.
The University of Kentucky community can witness the Kentucky Army National Guard land Black Hawk utility helicopters on campus beginning at 1 p.m. Sept. 19. The aircraft will be on display through 4 p.m.
